What education, work experience, and qualifications should I have?
The following items should get you started on the path to your career goal.
  • Complete your high school education.
  • Go to college and get a two year or four year degree (e.g. AA in Fire Science, BS - any major).College helps make you a well-rounded individual, helps you develop your communication skills, exposes you to a variety of people and situations.
  • Obtain EMT-I certification. The following colleges offer such a certification.
  • Obtain Firefighter I academy certification. The following colleges offer basic fire academy certification classes.
  • Get experience as a seasonal Firefighter, reserve/paid call or auxiliary Firefighter with various fire departments or private agencies such as Warner Brothers or Lockheed.
  • Become an EMT-I with a private ambulance company.
  • Obtain paramedic licensure from Daniel Freeman Hospital in Los Angeles, Mount San Antonio College and other schools.
  • Develop and maintain physical fitness and strength - upper body strength and aerobic capacity.
  • Learn a second language.
